The “Grade” Deal of the Year!

Professor Kurpis, in considering what you have intended, I think most of them have achieved in an average or above for me. First of all, the blogs do help students like me who rarely talked in the class a chance to express what I want without been criticized or analyzed by others in a face-to-face  situation, so it makes me feel a bit confortable to express feeling in a more “organic” way. The blog surely has becoming a tool for us to summarize what we have learn in our own words and learn different prospective by replying others blog entries. However, I will reluctant from posting too much information that may not related to the class since I guarantee that most of us will not be using this blog as frequent as we did during the semester. I also in concern of what I wrote would affect my personal life in certain degree since the blog is personally related to my account, so I chose to be conscious about what I wrote and only express when necessary and self-permissible way. Blogging as 20% of the grade, I have to say it’s a “grade” deal! All I need to do is merely express my feeling and opinion about what I have learned, piece of cake! What a relief! There is also something else I learn beside management—the interesting things you can find in blogs and people always so curious about each other. For example, my profile has been read more than 60 times in this semester (though I saw some ladies got over 120). Blogging could be a handy tool to market oneself in the future. Professor Kurpis, I think blogging is one of the specials about your class; you should keep it going.

Oh my God! I got a C!

The test shows me that I am a C type—the Conscientiousness type. I always try to do things as careful as I can though many times things did not go as I expected or went into a wrong direction because the lack of experience. I always plan my schedule ahead of time to get ready what may happen to prevent time constrain for unexpected events. I am fine in term of communication, however, I rarely seek for such opportunity to do so because I am a person rather restrain from talk wrong because my belief has instructed me that “the words out of your mouth like the water is pour out of the pot that you can never get it back and words hurt sometime.” Therefore, I tend to try to compliment with everyone’s idea to avoid personal conflicts; however, I will stand and fight for an idea that appeal to me strongly. I like to observe others reactions first before what I will do. On the other hand, I feel that I am still not cautious enough since I made so much mistakes just because of unpredicted aspects as the time because of time constrain or nervousness.
Generally, I think the test is helpful for me to further access my strength and weakness to advance myself and perfect personalities in the future.

Show a “V” to yourself

What defines the success of one’s life? It’s varied greatly among us. Some may think it’s the material achievements such as buy a house, a building, a jet, or even an island. Some of us will consider a celebrity with all the fames as successful since they are the ones have biggest influence on the society and earn money just by “showing up.” However, it is necessary to be able to have a vision of yourself. It is just like compare with shooting an arrow with a aim to the target or just shooting freely all around. Surely, the goal will be obtained if you actually aim toward it. And of course, whatever you are trying to do must be inspiring so that you can actually have the motivation to do so. The video did not say anything that is new, but it tells in a more convincing way by showing the actual cases. My vision for myself may not as aggressive as I mentioned above. In my religion, the whole religious belief is the way of life. I do not believe an island will bring me happiness, because we will die soon enough to not even enough to find out what are on it. I do not believe in gaining fames by showing off, because whatever you do has an impact while it could be extremely stressful if you made a really bad ones and even more worse, in front of cameras that broadcast your face and speeches all around the world. At this moment, all I want is having a business of my own and living a peaceful life with my happy family (in the future) while contributes to my religion as much as possible. Everything in this world is dying and approaching to an end. It’s not important whether I built a kingdom for me or earn a living, but how my actions are—it’s good or bad. In my belief, this life is nothing but a trial and a pathway toward hereafter. After your death, the only “things” will come with you are not money, women, fame, or land but only the deeds you have done in this world. Wealth in my religion is not empathizing for one to be successful, since it’s not the material success but spiritual. Surely, one must be able to feed oneself, therefore, strive for success in one’s career is an even better way to approach the goal. I will work in my field as accountant as everyone else, however, the money I worked for will not be wasted on alcohol, cigarettes, and such, but on living a happy life while building up a successful next generation, if god wills. I will vision myself as an successful business man with a big family which will has the true faith that encourage them to obtain piety and be success in this life and hereafter.

The Story of Five Pickles and A Fries of Well Done with No Salt

its kinda disturbing when you look at a burger's inside...

During the whole purchasing process, I had an overall positive experience with McDonald stuff. However, the whole process does take a while to proceed. It took almost 8 minutes which was the period of time from the start of ordering food to the moment received the food. The number of people involved for the whole process was three in total because two of the counter employees and one manager were involved in this order. As I start mentioning about the extra pickles for the hamburger, McDonald stuff first response was that I, as a customer, needed to pay extra twenty cents for additional ingredients. However, the real problem the employee encountered was the request of having the exact text of five pickles and well done, no salt fries to show on the receipt. The employee insisted the fact that she is not able to do so. After twice confirmation from her, I finally request to talk to the manager. She went and back very quickly to reply that “manager will be saying the something.” I questioned her if it is the words from the manager. She hesitated and went back to bring manager himself to me. As manager showed up, I repeated my request and he processed the order in a timely fashion without any hesitation. However, after I got the receipt and the actual food, I double checked the receipt and realized that the manager did everything correctly except he did not put the words “no salt” on the receipt. I called back the manager and informed him about such issue and he insisted this time that he could not go back to reprint it but he could, and did, write down “no salt” on the receipt for me. Because the requirement is not strictly “print” all text on the receipt but “appear” on the receipt, so I accepted the offer. In the McDonald, I doubled check the number of pickles and verified its number was exactly five.
In considering with my experience, I can say that the McDonald that I visited shown sufficient politeness to the customer and proceed the order without too much delay. As a management consultant to the McDonald, I would rate the management processes of my extra special order as acceptable. I witnessed the whole preparation process. Apparently, they did not ready for such special order, because I did not get the ordered burger until the manager took my order and reordered it in the way I asked for since the receipt was not printed until my specifications met. That took around six minutes. However, they made it up quickly, and took only around two to three minutes to prepare for the order from the moment that receipt was printed. If I was to change the process and make it more organized, I would have accommodate the request from the special order’s customer immediately and satisfied him as quick as possible to prevent other customers to pay too much attention on the scene. The communication was the critical part for such special orders to proceed in a timely manner; however the manager, in my opinion, tried to get over with the customer by telling the employee to insist her ordinal claim—“such request could not be performed”. My second scenario is that the employee hesitated from actually asking the manager for the request and considered this issue was easy to solve. After I insisted to talk to him, the manager realizes the fact that the customer could be stubborn as I was. This cost unnecessary delay for the ordering process and actually, if I did it in an exact lunch hour, a long line will be accumulated behind me. Obviously, the employees were not well trained for such rare situations. The one who served me realized such functions for the touch screen ordering machine only after this incidence. I recommend McDonald to implement a through training and simulation practice for all employees for all situations once a year to help employees be familiar with all necessary functions of the ordering machine. Recall the observation in the McDonald, I did see that the manager is trying to implement his leadership influence since he was stay behind the counter’s employees and observing them in a frequent basis to ensure their service quality, though the manager may not be able to fully paying attention on the counter because he was helping out the delivery of food as the same time. On the other hand, I consider it could be a weakness in leadership influence since he could not leave the employees functioning by themselves during the non-busy hours without personal supervision.

Decision Making

Last week’s decision making session was partially interesting and chaotic for the rest. I am a person who does not really interested in involving into decision making unless I feel the decisions that the group is moving toward may greatly against  my interest in general, or you can say a typical accommodative decision making  type. So at the beginning of the discussion, I got involve a bit by just shot out my desire of able to reserve both choice of curve and extra credit options. Then, the thing becomes interesting; several students went on the stage to try their best for “the common good” since unless there is 100% agreement between all attending students, we will get neither the curve nor any thing else. Unfortunately, I feel the discussion was once a while interrupted by different interest groups and the leaders tried to accommodate with everyone, or shall I say whoever actually said something aloud. Ends up that most opinions that provided by these participants have almost equal yet not enough people to support neither of the options. This resulting in a wide spread avoiding and accommodative mood among the students. The leader’s power rose from low to moderate and drop back to low from time to time, once in the middle there were just chaos between different sides’ interests against each other and fighting so hard and ends up both solutions were dropped because there was several students’ shout against. Finally, at the end after sense that the most agreeable solution may not ever emerge unless all available options are listing visually for all, they started to write on the board. Trust me that writing was one of the greatest advancement for the human civilization regardless in term of religious or scientific perspective. As time is ending, something more dramatic started. More students felt the crisis and the necessity to stand up for a last fight. The situation became two leaders split in two parts; however it did not last long since people quickly realized that there is no future for keep on fighting against each other but reach for a simpler solution. At the end, few minutes before the end of the class, leader’s power maintained at moderate level and group’s power as well since the group in this case has much stronger power therefore, it is rather impossible for a fellow student to emerge to lead all unless the one is extremely insightful. However, the leader made an accurate choice of accommodate only basic rights that all that had no problem at the very beginning. It ends up, we get we we wanted to get at the very beginning, all extreme thoughts and attempts disappeared into the dust of the battlefield. I think We would have done better job if we wrote down all suggestions and vote on them one by one at the very beginning and there will be less likely any chaos like what we experienced. Though I have to admit its kind of entertaining to see how people struggle for what they want. I believe our professor must enjoy such tournaments very much as well.

An Eggs-cellent Way to Plan, A Sad Way to End

Our team generally did a good job during the whole process though there were a bit discussion chaos happened in between; we considered it was a part of the brain storming process. Initially, we went through the first 3 steps at the same time. We defined our goal by evaluating our test objects and their properties. We drafted two plans. Then we evaluated two plans with their scenarios to the egg case and found one of them is more likely to achieve the achieve the best result though there is still opposite opinions. Among two plans, we chose the best one by a group vote.  After that, we had a quick discussion on building method and immediately afterward we started constructing process. During the process, the whole team automatically distributed tasks among us. One delivered the tape, two and sometimes three built the egg-protector. While the rest of the team gave advises and provided necessary hand support. In conclusion, we went through all 5 steps though we did follow exact order because the time frame constrain and high team discussion flexibility within the group. Our planning process was effective because our whole constructing period did not involve much discussion rather than actions that focus on building up the device. However, we could have been done perfectly if we just had one person keep focusing on the time available through the whole planning process so that we may speed it up a bit more. The final unpleasant pitch of disqualification because of unexpected “home run” of our project presenter, depressed some of our team members, who were as well dedicated, or spend even more energy and enthusiasm to this project. Off the record, I just found our team fell into a typical ethical dilemma—what is the right thing to do? Let the late team (which is not mean to be late but because of an outlawed run back) to try their project and grant success if successful, or disqualify them because the seconds of lateness has made which according to rule, does sound correct. If it is you, how you are going to decide, do you think professor gave the right decision to this team? Right or Wrong, Make your choice.

Culture Shock 1st Round American VS Chinese

"Don't cry man, things happen..."
Before following text, I have to disclaim that I did not went back China for almost five years; therefore, I cannot assure that what I am going to write about is still the same today. When living in NY, first difference I realized is people actually say phrases like “excuse me” or “Oh, I am sorry!” when they tried to passing by you or accidentally step on your feet or small body clash. At the beginning, I felt so strange that people  frequently apologize for such small things. Because in China, the clash of bodies will be unavoidable for many situations—get on the bus, get off the bus, walking on the road, shopping in the stores, and so on. In China, people tend to careless about what happened around them as long as it’s not life threatening, invasive. For example, in China, if someone accidentally step on the other person’s foot, neither of them will even look at the other unless the force was painful or aggressive. In contrast, I saw great difference in New York. People, in general, tend to be very polite. They were going to say “excuse me” when passing by, say “I am sorry” when accidentally intruded others space. I think it can be a result of the culture difference between the US and China. A visible Chinese culture is being low profile. On the other hand, Americans like to keep personal space and maintain orderly sequence. Invisible culture of Chinese is the practice of common understanding for actions, and silence is gold while Americans culture includes individualism which highly emphasizes personal space and respect toward other individuals, therefore value polite conversations. However, it does not mean Chinese do not respect each other but the understanding of“Hey, Things happen.” therefore, between Chinese, collation of abusive language or actual fight for personal space intrusion was rare while if the same thing happened to Americans, people will consider the one who intruded and kept silence as rude and aggressive and tend to result in arguments for certain people. For example, once I was on the line to pay money in a store, an old Chinese man moved backward and step on the American old lady’s feet, the old man just had a look at lady and quickly looked away without saying anything, the American old lady was smile and been polite at the old man when he was in the store but once he left, the American lady started swearing and complaining about how rude the old man is. Guess no matter you are Chinese or American, we all got both sides, the only difference is that how and when we present it.
Oh, by the way, there is unlikely to have second round for this post.

Best and Peace.

First of all, I am mob-less. Second, I careless about what you do, but I do when you begins to do something interesting, or anything that may torch my mind (which is pretty hard to achieve since these days we already been torched too many times by the commercials.) Today's topic is "how to mange others businesses."
Managerial topics are interesting because there is "...no right or wrong but depends on situation..." ( Professor, I quoted words I heard from you though it may not be yours. Anyway, let us not fall into the dilemma of plagiarism)
Managerial study is charming in a way that people do not need to really get a right answer but one that "fit." I starts to actually mange myself from the moment I realized that I only has that four more twenty years to go while one or two of them, God forbid, are very likely to be tagged on "out of stock." Anyway, we all going to leave one day, so why not see how well we can do to put ourselves under our control...or even better, put others under our control :)

So lets stop talking about me, and..........................

WARNING: VISTOR, yea, you! I mean it! YOU! Watch out for this blog! it will implement mind washing virus and spread chaos in your well washed brains!

*HINT: What you do next is either you listened to me or you just intuitively obeyed what I tried to achieved... I want to play a game, either way, which way will you choose? Stay or Leave? Make your choice.
